The reference 5213G is one of the scarcest, the present watch is only the fifth example to be offered at auction in the 10 years since the model’s launch in 2012. Combining two of Patek Philippe’s greatest complications, the minute repeater and the perpetual calendar – along with retrograde date indication, this magnificent watch is presented in superb condition and is accompanied by the full set of accessories. Collectors have the chance to obtain not only a highly complicated watch of the utmost quality and desirability but a significant piece of Patek Philippe’s recent history. The unusual and very beautiful layout of the silvered dial with applied Breguet numerals allows the display of several complications in an extremely elegant and easily readable way. In the upper half of the dial is the retrograde date scale numbered 1-31, when the hand reaches the last date of the month the hand instantly ‘flies’ back to the beginning. Apertures for the days of the week at 9 o’clock and months at 3 o’clock are centred by the leap-year indication below 12 o’clock. Placed in the lower half of the dial is the seconds with the aperture for the moon phases within. Reference 5213 The successor to the reference 5013 which was produced for 20 years, from 1992 to 2011. It was made only in white gold and was discontinued in 2016. The most notable difference to its predecessor is the case shape, the 5213 being an ‘officier’ style as opposed to the tonneau shaped case of the reference 5013. Very rarely seen on the market, in fact only four other examples have ever surfaced, making this an exceptionally rare opportunity for collectors. The Minute RepeaterImmediately after the foundation of Patek Philippe in 1839 the first quarter repeating pocket watches were produced, the earliest known minute repeater dates from 1845. It was and still is today one of the firm’s specialities. Minute repeating watches such as the present watch strike the hours, the quarters and the elapsed minutes after the last quarter hour on demand, activated by means of the slide on the side of the case. This fascinating and delightful audible function is one of the most difficult complications to execute and among the greatest horological challenges to perfect.
