砚山为文房清供之佳器，历来颇受文人雅士所爱。史载宋代米芾得到南唐后主李煜旧物-灵璧石“研山”后十分喜爱。他“抱眠三日”（《实为志林》记载），狂喜之极，即兴挥毫，留下了传世珍品《研山铭》（现藏故宫博物院），成为一段佳话。此石取自然平底，峰峦起伏而又有砚池的天然奇石，前耸数峰皆大如手指，参差错落。与石谱的宝晋斋砚山形神皆似。
