Important Kyoto/Satsuma Massive 3 Piece Vessel By Ito Tozan, Meiji Period. This spectacular lidded vessel is of exceptional quality, with rare turquoise and yellow enameled detailing. The lively phoenix bird and fierce dragon medallions are combined with gold dusted clouds, intricate geometric patterns and fine landscape details. The finial is an excellent sculpted aristocratic figure in a beautifully patterned dragon motif robe, with a child holding a book up to the seated nobleman. The separate base is a rare work of art independently of the central vessel. Both the base and central vessel have the same extensive gold signatures which roughly translates to: Ito Tozan of Japan made this. There is a crack running down one panel but it does not go all the way through to the interior. There is a tiny chip to the back of one ear, although it may have been original. Probably the largest piece ever done by Tozan. Tozan was the ceramic maker to the Imperial family and was only one of five ceramicist in Japanese history to be put in the Imperial Art Council. He won numerous awards worldwide and his work is in museums globally. Piece is almost certainly either made for the international exhibitions or Royal domestic figure. Dimension: 31 1/2" (80cm) High. PROVENANCE: From a distinguished Virginia private collection.A LIST OF RECOMMENDED THIRD-PARTY SHIPPER IS AVAILABLE UNDER SHIPPING INFORMATION. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT THEM FOR A QUOTE.
