EXTRAORDINARILY LARGE VASE WITH UNDERGLAZE BLUE DECORATION OF A RIVERSCAPE WITH HARBOUR AT THE FAMOUS PAVILION OF PRINCE TENG IN NANCHANG China, 19th ct, H. 139 cm (ohne Stand) Porcelain painted underglaze blue with a dense allover composition of the riverscape with boats moring at the harbor and people strolling through the scenery around the city gates and enjoying the views. Lion shape sculptural handles are attached to the neck and two pairs of sculptural dragons (chilong) decorate the shoulder. The famous pavilion is identified by inscriptions as known from documentary paintings such as the imperial journey scrolls and was must-see place for scholars and wealthy elite. It was sung as early as Tang dynasty, burnt down several times and was rebuilt throughout Ming and Qing dynasties.
