He was appointed to the Foreign Office in China in 1907-1917. Stations of this activity were Peking, Chengdu, Hankau, Tschifu, Mukden and Nanking. He was then appointed consul in Kristiania, (now Oslo), before moving back to China in 1926. In 1939 he was appointed Consul General in Shanghai and stayed in China until 1947. Very slightly chipped
