HEO MOK (MISU) (1595-1682) ATTR. - COMPENDIUM OF SEAL SCRIPT CHARACTERS "GEUM SEOK UN BU“ Korea, late Joseon dynasty, dated 1664 27 x 9,5 cm Ink on paper, bound book with handwritten characters. Title of the book: “Rhyme Classes [of Characters] of Bronze and Stone Inscriptions” (Geum Seok Un Bu, chinese: Jin shi yun bu). First an introduction is given with the radicals and their forms in seal script. Then the characters are listed according to the four tones. For each character as many different seal script forms from different bronze and stone inscriptions are given as possible. All is written by hand in delicate and beautiful calligraphy. Formerly from a South Korean professor's private collection, assembled from 1980s to 2007, by descent to a family member - German privat colletion Heo Mok (1595-1682) was a Korean politician, a neo-Confucian scholar and Daoist, best known by his pen name Misu, and considered the greatest calligrapher of his time. From the Chinese “Rhyming Epigraphic Dictionary” (Jinshi yunfu) from Ming period (ca. 1630-1640), which was considered an important dictionary for seal scripts in the Joseon dynasty, he transcribed a few important selected parts and wrote a dictionary. The National Museum of Korea owns twelve volumes of his original manuscripts, including two of this multi-volume dictionary. The present compendium was probably written by Misu after he gave up his position in Sam-Chuk in 1662 Traces of age, a later folding case for storage
