A Chinese huanghuali bamboo-shaped brush pot dating from the 18th century. Dimensions are: 6 1/4 inches tall X 6 1/2 inches wide, 15.87 cm X 16.51 cm. All measurements are approximate.

This brush pot is crafted with top grade huanghuali- its color is deep and rich; its grain is showing an enticing pattern that looks like steaming fog and shifting clouds, like grooves of mountains and strings of rivers. It takes the shape of a section of a bamboo. The brush pot is aged nicely, elegant, and lustrous; a fine example of a scholar’s item. Huanghuali was the preferred material for furniture crafting from Ming Dynasty to early Qing Dynasty. The material is loved by the world because of its delicate texture, rich color and variating pattern. Huanghuali has now become scarce due to excessive sourcing. At the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, the concept of "simplicity of lifestyle" was popular among scholars. They praised nature and pursued simple and modest living. Such philosophy was expressed in scholar’s items as well; not lavishly ornamented but rather focused on practicality, and the natural beauty of the material itself was emphasized. This bamboo shaped brush holder is simply carved to show off the nature beauty of the material; truly a worthy artifact for lovers of scholar’s items. A similar blue and white brushpot can be found in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, No. 2009.630 . Similar brushpots have sold at Christie's Hong Kong in May 2012 as lot 4088 and at Christie's New York on March 2015 as lot 194.

十八世紀 黃花梨竹節形筆筒

此筆筒采用上好花梨，色澤深沈，氣韻古茂，其木紋精妙有如雲蒸霞蔚，又如山河奔騰，可見取材之精。形製為竹節形，造型端莊大氣，又不失文雅，整器質地瑩潤，包漿豐厚，是一件難得的文房佳器。黃花梨為明代至清代早期家具製作的首選之材，因其質地細膩，色澤沈靜，紋理變化多樣，深受世人喜愛。黃花梨由於過度使用已經匱乏，故而彌足珍貴。清初「樸學」漸盛，文人崇尚自然，追求樸實簡潔，表現於器物，不假繁飾而重實用，突出其本身的天然紋理與質地之美。此件筆筒竹節形雕工簡潔，配合其天然紋理，君子浩然之氣和文人清雅之趣兼得。
