† A LARGE GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF CROWNED BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNIChina, late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) to Republic Period (1912-1949). Shakyamuni is cast, seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus base, the hands in bhumisparsa mudra, wearing a long flowing robe finely incised with foliate designs, richly adorned with beaded jewelry with turquoise, coral and glass inlays. The serene face with heavy-lidded almond-shaped eyes, circular urna, strongly arched eyebrows, hooked nose and bow-shaped lips forming a subtle smile is flanked by long ears decorated with inlaid, lotus-shaped earrings. The hair arranged in a high chignon behind the elaborate, seven-leaved crown with animal emblem. The base is not sealed.The sculpture elegantly depicts the moment in which Buddha Shakyamuni achieves enlightenment under the bodhi tree. Having overcome all of Mara's threats, Buddha presses a single finger to the Earth to witness his enlightenment.Condition: Very good condition with traces of use, casting flaws, occasional light scratches, some wear to gilt.
