A DOUBLE-PEACH-SHAPED CINNABAR LACQUER BOX AND COVER CHINA, QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY It has a flat foot and it is shaped as two peaches of longevity linked together. The top of the cover is carved with boys playing and fighting for a lotus sprig in a landscape planted with banana and pine trees. H: 4,5 cm - L: 11,8 cm - width: 6,7 cm Provenance: - a private collection; - purchased from BONHAM’S Knightsbridge, London, 2017-11-06, lot 276. Note: The peach is homonymous with longevity hence two peach are equivalent to a double shou (寿) symbol and are a wish for longevity. A boy together with a lotus sprig conveys the wish ‘tōngzhī lián zì’ (通知聯字) standing for a continuous and harmonious descent. 双桃形朱漆盖盒 中国,清代,19世纪 NOTE: CONDITION REPORTS AND MEASUREMENTS It is up to the bidder to satisfy themselves prior to buying as to the condition of a lot. In relation to Condition Reports, whilst we make certain observations on the lot, which are intended to be as helpful as possible, references in the condition report to damage or restoration are for guidance. The absence of such a reference does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others. The condition report is an expression of opinion only and must not be treated as a statement of fact. Measurements and weight are approximate and the potential bidder may re-ask it to be checked when asking for a condition report.
