A very rare pair of Staffordshire saltglaze models of Hawks, circa 1755-60A very rare pair of Staffordshire saltglaze models of Hawks, circa 1755-60The birds standing upright and looking straight ahead, perched on rockwork bases, cast in white saltglaze with the eyes, beaks and bases glazed in dark brown, 16.5cm high (2)These splendid models were apparently copied from earlier Japanese export porcelain prototypes, decorated in a similar manner. Staffordshire saltglaze hawks were made in several different sizes and vary in their colouring, from simple brown washes as here, to full polychrome enamelling. A larger pair, coloured as the present lot, is in the Weldon Collection at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (inv. no.G1969-11).
