A large Chelsea dish, circa 1750-52A large Chelsea dish, circa 1750-52Of lobed form, outlined in black and painted in red, blue, turquoise and gold with the 'Lady in a Pavilion' pattern, the lady standing gracefully to the left, the elaborate pavilion hung with drapery and tassels and covering a bird perched on a basket and a small stool, another small bird in flight above, 27.2cm diamProvenanceBrenda Dunning CollectionThis pattern originated in 17th century Japanese porcelain wares and was copied by Chantilly and other European manufactories. The Chelsea sale catalogue of 1755 refers to the 'Lady pattern' while the 1756 catalogue includes the 'old japan lady pattern'. These could possibly have referred to old stock remaining from the Raised Anchor period. A Chelsea beaker with its saucer in this combination of shape and pattern was included in the British Museum's Porcelain for Palaces exhibition, see the catalogue (1990), p.280, no.328.
