A seated female statuette in copper alloy with legs bent to one side, holding a jar with two hands. She is wearing a torque like necklace. Strapped with four strings on the back. The hair is combed back in a ponytail. Wide almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose and a small luscious mouth characterize the face. In antiquities due to the belief in afterlife, we have scenes or actual objects depicting an offering of a jar which were usually used to contain water, milk, wine, honey, sacred oils and different grains to the deceased. The traditional offering jar was also a symbol or a gesture of desire to purify the soul of the dead. The style and the details of this statuette are particularly fine. Most objects from this period are in hard or semi-hard stones and they are rarely found in copper alloy or other metals. 10.3 cm. height 272 grams.CONDITION Very fine condition with very nice patina. PROVENANCE Previously in a private Belgium family collection, kept in the Netherlands since 1960 up to now. LITERATURE Ancient Art from the Shumei Family Collection, New York, 1996: n° 4.
