凤尾尊是由古铜器“觚”演进而来的。古代的觚原是酒器，后由演变成祭器，用于明堂或各式大典。因其器形端庄得体，宋代以后进一步转化称为陈设器。凤尾尊自元代开始流行，以瓷器烧制而成的凤尾尊以龙泉窑最为有名，至明末仍盛行不衰，为厅堂陈设的花瓶之一，多体型高大，至明末清初，景德镇才开始大量烧制凤尾尊造型的瓷器。
