The subject is said to depict a stirrup-charge in August 1914 but there is liberal use of artistic licence: the soldiers are shown wearing spats and hose (reserved solely for parade order); the grey horses, judged to be too distinctive, had all been dyed chestnut; and no running man could keep abreast of a galloping horse ++ Some grazes and bruises to the canvas
