Viviani expose dès l'âge de 17 ans en rencontrant immédiatement un grand succès tant auprès du public que de la critique. Paysagiste à forte personnalité et modernité, son style très original est caractérisé par de fortes expérimentations chromatiques. Son opposition au fascisme le pousse à s'exiler en 1931 en Uruguay et il fonde l'Académie des Beaux-Arts de Montevideo, il sera de retour à Milan en 1937. Peintre original, il s'adonne tant à l'huile qu'à l'aquarelle ou à la gravure avec un style proche du pointillisme, développant cependant sa propre technique caractérisée par de fins filaments de couleur en forme de virgule.
