19th century, variegated red glaze Chinese vase The voluptuous body of the vase of globular form, rising to broad shoulders and a tall stick neck. The vase is covered in a stunning and complex vitreous oxblood red glaze, with areas of transmutation purple and blue (flambé), thinning at the mouth to a warm cream, and pooling lusciously at the foot.Turning the vase over, one can see just how thick and unctuous the glaze truly is, covering much of the foot, and showing signs of having been broken off the firing block. While this is typical for late Qing ceramics with this type of runny, flambé glaze, the incredible thickness of the glaze is remarkable. Height 35cm Good conditionProvenance: Private collection from Sutton
