Spanish school; 17th and 19th century. "Adoration of the Shepherds". Jet. It presents faults caused by the passage of time. Measurements: 35 x 22 x 7 cm. On a jet support the author of this work recreates the moment in which, after the birth of the Child Jesus, in Jerusalem, the shepherds come to adore the one who has been appointed as king of the Jews. The scene shows an almost symmetrical composition, built in height, with the Child in the centre of the lower part and his parents flanking the figure of the baby. Above them are the shepherds, all of them looking towards the child, and finally, in the upper area, the manger with the presence of the ox and mule, characteristic of the Nativity scenes, can be seen. Despite the darkness resulting from the carving support, the piece allows us to appreciate the detail with which the author has tried to shape the scene, examples of which are the drapery of the clothes, the shape of the bricks in the upper area, and the cradle of the Child, which seems to simulate straw or wicker. It is likely that this work was part of a larger sculptural ensemble, perhaps the cycle of the infancy of Jesus, as the adoration of the shepherds was normally a theme that was used in ornamentations made up of various scenes. A noteworthy element in this piece is the niche in which the jet carving is located, which due to its characteristics is of a later period, although aesthetically it simulates models from the 17th century. Made of carved and gilded wood, the work has a symmetrical design, which follows classical models that can be seen in the use of the columns flanking the front, which conserve their polychromy and with plant elements such as acanthus leaves, which are arranged on the sides of the upper area and in the form of a coping.
