Circle of Willem Adriaensz Key, British 1516-1568- Portrait of a lady, half-length, turned to the left, wearing a dark dress with white ruffs, cuffs and cap; oil on panel, 49.4 x 37.9 cm. Provenance: [Probably] With Mr Charles Redfern of Warwick, 1852.;By whom sold to Sir John Hay Williams (1794-1859), 2nd Baronet of Bodelwyddan, and of Rhianva, Anglesey, 1852 for £13.;By descent to the present owner.Note: The present work was presumably conceived in the 1550s-1560s in Antwerp, and therefore very likely from Keys ambit. In the 'Memoranda Concerning Rhianva for the use of our children' (by Lady Sarah, wife of Sir John Hay Williams) is a letter from picture dealer Mr Charles Redfern of Warwick, dated 27 October 1852, recording his sale of (presumably) the present work to Sir John Hay Williams for £13: 'The Head of a Dutch lady beautifully painted in the school of Rubens from Warwick Castle.' Redfern supplied four pictures to Sir John in 1852 for a total of £46.Please refer to department for condition report
