Northern European School, early 18th Century- Figures reading and merrymaking in an interior; oil on canvas, 38.5 x 40.5 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale Bonhams, London, 30 January 2019, lot 229.; Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is clearly inspired by the Northern European, particularly Flemish, genre subjects that were so common in the 17th Century. Six men are gathered around a table in a tavern, talking animatedly and examining a map which sits atop the table. The map's lettering appears to read PRAG[UE] and BOH[EM], and indeed the entire scene is imbued with northern European compositional motifs and humour. The treatment of the slightly over-sized and rather grotesque facial features particularly recalls the figures depicted in the tavern scenes of Jan Jansz. van Buesem (1600-1649) while the general subject and its vivid rendering are entirely reminiscent of the interior genre scenes of David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690).
