Allaert van Everdingen, Dutch 1621-1675- Landscape with two figures, a windmill and church; watercolour and grey wash on laid paper, signed in the artist's initials AVE (lower left), 9.7 x 13 cm. Provenance: With P. & D. Colnaghi & Co., London.; Private Collection, UK, since 1970.; By descent. Exhibited: London, P. & D. Colnaghi & Co., 2 June-26 June 1970, no.31. Note The present work is a particularly charming work on paper by Van Everdingen, with the typically Dutch setting emphasising the artists place in the impressive canon of 17th-century Netherlandish landscape artists, alongside artists such as Jan van Goyen (1596-1656). The medium of watercolour allows the artist to convey a sense of movement and freshness, illustrated by the figures and trees which are both clearly being thrashed by the prevailing winds.
