Thomas Rowlandson, British 1756-1827- The New Inn; pencil, pen and black ink, watercolour and grey and brown wash on paper, titled 'THE NEW INN' (centre right), 36 x 47 cm. Provenance: With Thomas Agnew & Sons, London.; With P. & D. Colnaghi & Co., London.; Private Collection, since 1965.; By descent. Note: The present work is characteristic of Rowlandson's output, with the densely packed figures imbuing the scene with a sense of liveliness. Indeed, in this way, Rowlandsons oeuvre reveals a debt to the work of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525/30-1569), concentrating on scenes of everyday rural life.
