Note: The present work is set in a richly furnished interior, occupied by lavishly dressed figures. More heavily peopled than much of Cuny’s work, there is a palpable sense of dynamism and emotion, which is absent from many of the artist’s more restrained and contemplative paintings. Indeed, the crowded scene has allowed the artist to explore the rich variety of fabrics in the figures’ clothing, and Cuny has adopted a vibrant colour palette to further emphasise the sense of liveliness.
