Elie Anatole Pavil, Ukrainian 1873-1948- Fishers by a canal in summer; oil on panel, signed 'E. A. Pavil.' (lower left), numbered '4' (on the reverse), 24 x 32.5 cm. Note: The present work is clearly influenced by the French Impressionists and is typical of Pavil's style. His adoption of loose, unblended brushstrokes allowed him to explore the depiction of the intangible elements of light and movement, which were of significant interest to the Impressionists. The subject of the canal was often explored by the artist, with the depiction of water a theme to which he repeatedly returned. Please refer to department for condition report
