The earliest water coupe we see today is typically from the Wei dynasty or the Jin dynasty. In the Jin dynasty and the Southern and Northern dynasties, most water coupes were made of celadon and created with a round mouth and bulging body, with some occasionally created in the form of animals. This frog-form water coupe has a small mouth, a short straight neck, and a flat body. The mouth of the frog functions as the water outlet. Each limb on the frog is detailed with patterns and textures. Covered with celadon glaze, this water coupe was expertly crafted to create an interesting and vivid rendition of a frog. The decorative and functional aspects of this water coupe are indicative of the high level of craftsmanship and artistic ability of the time. The water coupe is considered the "fifth treasure" of scholar’s items. Because of its small size and elegance, this exquisitely-made water coupe reflects the aesthetic taste of scholars. This frog-form water coupe is a rare and precious beauty, both because of its high level of craftsmanship, and also because it serves as a fine example of the development and evolution of the water coupe in ancient China. See British Museum Collection, no. PDF.290, as seen in figure 1.
