Southeast Asia, Burma, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful, playable, bronze gong that hangs from a mahogany wood and rope framework and is accompanied by a wooden mallet with a fabulous bright orange fabric covering. Embellished with liberal remains of red and yellow pigments, the impressive instrument boasts a discoid body with a raised nipple boss at the center, all decorated with white and red pigments to display the image of a lotus flower. Burmese gongs are recognizable because of their prominent boss (nipple) in the center, just slightly recessed from the rest of the gong body. This gong has been additionally adorned with Burmese text inscribed on the verso.
