Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sawankhalok or Sukhothai culture, ca. 13th to 15th century CE. A collection of 3 large stoneware vessels that spent centuries on the ocean floor! The tallest jar has a slender flat base, and a piriform body that tapers inward to the neck which flares outward to the thick rim. The large basin has thick, and steep walls and the tondo is elaborately adorned with incised abstract swirling motifs. The squat pot has 4 strap handles around the wide mouth, and the surface is also heavily coated in mineral deposits, but the original surface was glazed in dark brown from the rim ending above the lower midsection. The surfaces of all have evidence of marine activity- but the interior of pot is heavily encrusted with barnacles, shell fragments, and sea worm casings! These vessels were probably part of the cargo on a trade ship before being lost during a shipwreck! Size (large basin): 12.5" Diameter x 4.5" W (31.8 cm x 11.4 cm) Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
