Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A fabulous kris (keris) with a gorgeous wooden handle displaying eight intricately-carved abstract masks. The hard-wood sheath has a slender body, a bulbous upper section to protect the pointed blade guard, and a removable, form-fitting brass jacket boasting etched and gilded foliate motifs atop a red-lacquered ground. The blade has a straight profile with sharpened edges and a pointed tip, a curving shoulder prong, undulating bands of nickel, and a silvered-brass separation cap atop the hand guard. Size: 20.125" L x 6.25" W (51.1 cm x 15.9 cm); length of blade: 14.75" L (37.5 cm).
