Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. An attractive example of a personal ceremonial dagger known as a kris (also keris). The hand-carved wooden handle has a pair of abstract anthropomorphic maskettes along the interior curve, and the copper-silver spacer disc beneath is adorned with intricate granulated motifs. The forged-steel blade bears a straight profile with a projecting hand guard and ribbons of lighter nickel hammered into the surfaces. The sheath is carved from a single piece of wood with a broad, sweeping guard protector as well as a form-fitting brass sheath jacket.
