Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Salinar culture, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A hand-built and burnished pottery temple effigy bearing 3 progressively narrowing tiers that culminate in an awning that shelters a pair of abstract anthropomorphic figures. The orange-hued vessel is decorated with repeating brown and yellow bands with some orange bands present along the upper half, and the sides of the awning bear inversely corresponding step motifs that create an eye-catching presentation. Several perforations in the upper 2 tiers suggest that this architectural effigy was used as an incensario or as a vessel for holding funerary offerings at one time.
