A set of ten ebonised birch Spiderback dining chairs, circa 1905, originally produced for the board room of Country Life magazine, probably under the direction of Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens, the oval backrests with spiderweb form slats radiating from an oval panel, with outward bowed armrests above black fabric upholstered horsehair seats, on front square tapered legs and conforming tapered and curved back legs, one chair stamped to underside `A.M`, each 95cm high, 54cm wide (10) Note: For a similar example, see V&A Accession no W.6-1944, Victoria & Albert Museum collection. Note: It is known that Lutyens kept a copy of ‘A History of English Furniture’ by Percy MacQuoid. In this book, there is an example of a Spiderback chair attributed to Sheraton, (see fig 921). This example may have provided the source for Lutyens’ Spiderback design for Delhi, Campion Hall and others, dating from 1929 onwards.
