碑立于南朝刘宋孝武帝大明二年，碑文详记云南爨姓源流及墓主祖孙三辈之仕历，为研究爨氏历史及其政权机构、礼乐制度之重要文献，与晋《爨宝子碑》并称“二爨”。清道光六年，为金石家阮元出任云贵总督时，于陆良贞元堡发现，命知州张浩建亭保护（碑刻亦镌刻此事，拍品有拓出），乃云南第一古石。康有为在《广艺舟双楫》中将此碑列为“隶楷极则，神品第一”。拍品旧木夹板，剪裱装一册，墨色沉凝，拓印精良，首有书法家陈其铨题签。
