Description

A late 19th century French Boulle mantel clock and a similar period French Tortoiseshell mantel clock the first with movement signed Japy Frères and numbered 8830, the second unmarked, numbered 36247 (2)A late 19th century French Boulle mantel clock and a similar period French Tortoiseshell mantel clockthe first with movement signed Japy Frères and numbered 8830, the second unmarked, numbered 36247the first with shaped case with gilt brass foliate mounts and corresponding handle, on scrolling feet, the enamel dial with Roman and Arabic chapter ring and blued steel diamond poker hands, the twin spring barrel movement with anchor escapement and Brocot type suspension, striking on the half and full hour on a blued steel wire gong with pendulum, winding key and a suspension setting key, the second with shaped case with elaborate gilt brass mounts and floral inlay, surmounted by an urn, false brass frets to either side, on scroll feet, the enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals and blued steel diamond poker hands, the twin spring barrel movement with anchor escapement and Brocot suspension striking on the half and full hour on a blued steel gong with sunburst pendulum and two winding keys, (2)The Japy Frères mark on the back plate of the Boulle clock came into use by the company in about 1888. The centre of the mark usually bore a legionaries cross; on this particular clock that cross is absent. It is possible that it was not used by the company for this movement, or it may be that the cross was removed after the clock was sold, though why this would have been done remains unclear. The firm of W & J Milne was established in Edinburgh in 1854 on 126 Princes Street. The firm specialised in box manufacture, but also worked in leather and stationary. In 1875, the firm was taken over by William Kerse and Alfred Child Sneezum, who would continue it until its closure in 1899. It is likely, then, that this clock pre-dates 1899.
