The centre of the mark usually bore a legionaries cross; on this particular clock that cross is absent. It is possible that it was not used by the company for this movement, or it may be that the cross was removed after the clock was sold, though why this would have been done remains unclear. The firm of W & J Milne was established in Edinburgh in 1854 on 126 Princes Street. The firm specialised in box manufacture, but also worked in leather and stationary. In 1875, the firm was taken over by William Kerse and Alfred Child Sneezum, who would continue it until its closure in 1899. It is likely, then, that this clock pre-dates 1899.
