1st-2nd century A.D. A partially preserved puddingstone 'beehive' circular quern, with a man-made round depression on the central flat side. Cf. Major, H., 'The dating of Puddingstone querns' in Lucerna, 27, Colchester, 2004, pp.2-4; cf. similar quern fragments in PAS nos.BH-B05291, PUBLIC-7E38C8, PUBLIC-906CD3. British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme report number DENO-7E28DB. 10.1 kg, 29 cm (11 1/2 in.). Found Staunton in the Vale, Nottinghamshire, UK, by Ken Burrell whilst searching with a metal detector on Saturday 1st April 2017. Apanied by a copy of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report number DENO-7E28DB. Puddingstone was a conglomerate of flint pebbles in a siliceous matrix (Major, 2004, p.2). Roman quern fragments have been spotted by the archaeologists, especially in Essex, in the fabric of numerous churches. [No Reserve]
