Description
Translation provided by Youdao
1st-2nd century A.D. A copper-alloy phallic mount with elongated shaft and concave reverse, the tip rounded and defined by a raised transverse ridge, small rounded testicles projecting to each side of the base of the shaft with inner edges defined by a raised ridge. Cf. British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme no.SF-C5A9C1, for a similar mount found in Suffolk. 8.66 grams, 39 mm (1 1/2 in.). Found on the Thames foreshore, London, UK. Acquired on the UK antiques market between 1974-1985. Albert Ward collection (part 4), Essex, UK. Phallic objects were worn as good-luck charms with amuletic properties. They appear to have been particularly associated with the military and their distribution in some counties, like Suffolk, shows a bias towards sites with military phases or retired military residents, for example Londinium.
