Translation provided by Youdao
2nd century A.D. A silver axe type brooch with vertical cutting edge to the blade, D-sectioned shaft with baluster-style terminals, hinge and catch-plate to reverse. See Oxbow Books, A visual catalogue of Richard Hattatt's Ancient Brooches, Oxford, 2000, nos.1143-1630, from Turkey and Balkans. 11.3 grams, 47 mm (1 3/4 in.). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. Such brooches likely had a religious or mystical association, model axes being the mostmon form amongst metal cult objects. It is possible that they were associated with the cult of Jupiter Dolichenus, widespread in the Eastern Provinces and in the Balkans, from where this typology originates.
