14th-15th century A.D. A large fragment of a lead-alloy pilgrim's badge in the form of a caparisoned horse; the animal once mounted by a figure of Saint Thomas Becket whose left leg may be seen across the horse's shoulder; with detailing to the head, bridle and saddle cloth. Cf. The British Museum, museum number 1856,0701.2035, for similar; Mitchiner, Michael, Medieval and Secular Badges, Hawkins, 1986, items 80-89 for type. 7.25 grams, 66 mm (35.6 grams total, 93 x 76 including case) (2 3/8 in. (3 5/8 x 3 in.)). Found Thames foreshore spoil, London, UK, 1980s. This is one of the largest and most interesting of all British pilgrim badges both for its size and for the detail achieved with Thomas riding a horse; some examples include a retainer who leads the horse.
