18th century A.D. A rectangular panel, once part of aposite icon, representing the Resurrection of Christ; the centre with Christ surrounded by Divine Light, raising Adam and Eve from Hell, around them other souls from limbo brought to Heaven, each figure nimbate, traces of blue enamel to the reticulate background. Cf. Ahlborn, R.E. & Beaver-Bricken Espinola, V., Russian Copper Icons and Crosses from the Kunz collection: Castings of Faith, Washington, 1991, nos.14,16,17. 73 grams, 62 mm (2 1/2 in.). Acquired 1980s-1990s. Collection of M. Cummings, Lincolnshire, UK. The iconography is typical of the Anastasis or Resurrection of Christ, with the gates of Hades broken under the feet of the Christ, echoing the phrase: 'Christ is Risen From the Dead, Trampling Down Death by Death, and Upon Those in the Tombs Bestowing Life!'.
