During their lifetimes, the two artists were considered rivals, as Huang Ding studied with Wang Yuanqi (1642-1715) and as such is considered a member of the Luodong school. Huang Ding was known for successfully transmitting the style of Yuan Dynasty masters, and this lot is in the style of Huang Gongwang (1269-1354). Theposition is mainly adapted from a work attributed to Huang Gongwang that was copied as the sixteenth leaf of Xiao Zhong Xian Da (To See Large Within the Small), the album associated with Dong Qichang (1555-1636) that served as sourcebook of early models for artists in the Seventeenth century and thereafter.
