He was a student of Xu Beihong and Huang Junbi, and became famous in China for his dramatic depictions of the Yangzi River gorges. In the 1980's a chance meeting between the artist Cen Xuegong and art dealer Tsao Jing Ying would develop into a lifetime friend. Mr. Tsao's appreciation of Cen Xuegong's creative talent allowed the San Francisco-based dealer to broadcast the artist to a new, North American audience. The present lot was offered was a gift from the artist to Mr. Tsao in 1983.
