Rare Japanese 17th Century Edo Arita Porcelain rectangular Box-Shaped Incense Burner in biscuit incised as "shagreen" ground with highlights of clear glaze, the cover pierced for escaping incense in the form of a Shishi Dog & Peony; Japanese storage box. Height with cover 2 1/4 inches (5.7 cm.) X width 3 1/4 inches (8.3 cm.). PROVENANCE: Purchased at Sotheby Parke Bernet circa 1978 from the estate of Harold Philip Stern (1922-1977) former curator of the Freer Gallery Washington DC, Author, Lecturer, Teacher and all around expert in Japanese Works of Art. (Obituary included).
