A LARGE CHINESE NEOLITHIC MACHANG PAINTED POTTERY JAR. Made from a pale brown pottery and is quite thinly-potted for its size. It has two loop handles at its waist and has been decorated with geometric patterns in red and dark brown pigments. Machang phase of the Majiayao Culture (Gansu / Qinghai province), c.2300 ?2000 BC. Height 30.5cm, 34cm width at handles. Provenance: from a Sussex collection assembled during the 1990s.General surface wear expected for age. Slight minor chips around the rim. No obvious sings of repair.
