此歙砚略作长方圆角形，制式少见，久经传承使用，砚堂磨去甚多，墨池深陷，砚额以减地浮雕之法饰双螭纹，砚背下方具两棋足，通体皮壳略显斑驳之态，古色古香。
歙石的开采约始于唐，南唐后主李煜称"澄心堂纸、李廷珪墨、龙尾砚三者为天下之冠"。至宋代达到鼎盛，恰如宋代书法家蔡君漠所赞：“玉质纯苍理致精，锋芒都尽墨无声。相如闻道还持去，肯要秦人十五城。”由此可见歙砚之价值连城。元初因砚坑崩塌而停采，直到清早期才一度恢复，故歙砚存世稀少。
