James Cowie RSA, Scottish 1886-1956 - Two Figures; graphite on paper, 24 x 26 cm (unframed) Provenance: the Artist's family, with Bourne Fine Art, Edinburgh (according to the label with the work) Note: Cowie was an admirer of Poussin and the painters of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, he believed in the classical values of self-restraint and objectivity, making a number of preparatory sketches before completing his larger and more finished compositions. In 1937 Cowie became the warden of the Patrick Allan Fraser School of Art at Hospitalfield House, some of his pupils included Robert Colquhoun, Robert MacBryde and Joan Eardley.
