Note: Barry lived in France and Italy in the 1920s and was well travelled around Europe. Influenced by Pointillism and the bright colour of the Fauves, his work evolved into a unique style. Chateaus, castles and fortresses were common subject matter for Barry no matter where he lived. He made a later brightly coloured version of this scene using the secondary colours. He worked alongside Newlyn School greats like Stanhope Forbes, Henry Scott Tuke and Norman Garstin, spending many years in St Ives. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers.
