After meeting Le Corbusier in the 1920s, André Bloc abandoned the beginning of a career as an engineer for architecture. He would go on to form the group Espace, with members , Félix Del Marle, Edgard Pillet, Victor Vasarely and Sonia Delaunay, whose goal was to use the principles of constructivism and neo-plasticism for urban and social transformation. Most of the members came from the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, an association dedicated to exhibiting abstract art which still persists today. A retrospective was held by Galerie Drouart, Paris of works exhibited in the 1940s and 1950s for which the stamp on the reverse of this work corresponds.
