Pranas Domsaitis, South African 1880-1965 - Landscape with cottages; oil on board, signed in the centre 'Domsaitis', 36 x 47.25 cm Note: Domsaitis spent his first 27 years as a farmer in the Kingdom of Prussia, before receiving sponsorship from Max Liebermann to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Konigsberg. He was influenced by the German Expressionists, Georges Rouault and Edvard Munch, whom he met on a trip to Norway in 1914. In 1949 he moved to South Africa and spent the rest of his life there. He frequently painted landscapes and village scenes often with Christian themes.
