The present work is a study of the head of the central figure, Saint Mary, from The Virgin and Child with Saint John and an Angel, attributed to the workshop of Sandro Botticelli. The original tondo dates to the 15th century, and is currently housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Flaking and losses along extreme edges, along with abrasions likely caused by a prior frame. A few scattered small wormholes. Yellowing to the varnish layer. Finely patterned craquelure. A few scattered areas of scuffing faint scratching. This lot is offered unframed.Under UV: varnish fluoresces green unevenly, and is drippy in appearance in some areas. An older campaign of restoration appears beneath the varnish layer, presenting as finely applied retouching to address craquelure on the face. More recent retouching includes apparent strengthening to the darkest tones, particularly at the edges of the work, and to the edges of the figure`s blue veil.
