Cutam wares were particularly associated with Ligor or Nakhon Si Thammarat as it is know today. Ligor was a Malay Islamic Sultanate until around the mid-seventeenth century when it gradually came under the rule of Ayutthya. The technique of niello was either brought over by the Portuguese to Ayutthya in 1512 or was introduced during the fifteenth or sixteenth century when Ligor had strong links with Aceh and the Ottoman Empire. These cutam wares were highly prized and often associated with royalty. Similar cutam wares are illustrated in Warren & Tettoni 1994, p.26, nos.2-5A and there is a cutam decorated tea kettle and tray in the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore (see Adelaide 2006, p.67, no.44).
