A TURQUOISE-GROUND FAMILLE-ROSE 'LANDSCAPE' WALL VASE Qianlong periodPROPERTY OF ANOTHER OWNERA TURQUOISE-GROUND FAMILLE-ROSE 'LANDSCAPE' WALL VASEQianlong periodModeled as a flattened baluster vase supported on a spreading foot and rising to a trumpet neck set with mask-form loop handles, the body with a reserved panel enclosing a landscape in springtime, the grassy riverside knolls with blossoming trees and shrubs amidst blue rocks, white-painted houses, and distant mountains, the reserved panel at the neck with a European man standing in a similar setting and holding a small vase at his chest, his long, curly red hair contrasting with the lime-green jacket, all set against a turquoise-enameled ground densely patterned with tiny raised bosses and accented with gilt florets and scrollwork also in relief, the base and verso enameled in sepia and grisaille tones with a faux marble pattern, the verso with a recessed notch and four apertures for suspension. 7in (17.8cm) highProvenance:Sara Fredericks (1903-1986), likely acquired in the 1960s in New York, thence by descentThe present wall vase is expertly painted in jewel-toned enamels with a classical landscape centering the composition and a European subject at the neck, all framed by turquoise and gilt details in relief on the principal sides, and an enameled faux marble pattern at the foot and reverse. This combination of indigenous and foreign motifs, the highly nuanced tonalities, and the inclusion of trompe l'oeil patterns even on the sides that are rarely seen, are all emblematic of the tastes and technical virtuosity of the Qianlong period (1736-1795). Compare a wall vase of this type, but with boys and immortals in the reserved panels, sold at Christie's, London, 18 June 2003, lot 141; and another of this type but of squatter proportions and bearing an image of a woman and child in the central panel, sold in our Knowle rooms, 19th April 2011, lot 510. The same techniques and aesthetics were used for a Qianlong seal mark and period brushpot sold at Christie's, New York, 18 September 2014, lot 964, and on a box and cover sold in the same rooms, 21 March 2013, lot 1565.Sara Fredericks (1903-1986) was a socialite and premier retailer who specialized in luxury women's apparel. She was friends with top fashion designers including James Galanos, Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, and Hubert de Givenchy, and her company, Sara Fredericks Salon Shops, carried clothes by these designers as well as by Chanel, Chloe, and other iconic brands. The company had locations in Miami, Palm Beach, Sarasota, New York City, and Boston.
