A Japanese teapot with recessed figural cartouches, Early 18th century, Japan, An unusual style novelty teapot with a thin curved spout and C-handle. Both sides feature a cartouche, deeply sunk into the pot with small figural reliefs. One side showing a foo dog and a flower, the other side showing a rock and flower. The lid and top border as chrysanthemum flower petals. The flat unglazed base is not marked. L 14.5 cm (handle to spout), H 11 cm, Some damage to end of spout and some crazing of the glaze. Some wear of the pattern and manufacturing flaws and irregularities. No other damage and no restoration. Lit: 'Fine & Curious, Japanese export porcelain in Dutch collections', by Christiaan J.A. Jörg, 2003, page 195, two similar pots from a private collection are illustrated and discussed.
